How do I choose my mattress?
Many people have a hard time picking the so called “right” mattress. There is a lot of research that can be done, but it seems as though the more research done, the more confusing the process becomes. Each mattress has a story-line to go along with as to why it’s good for you. The truth is that there are a lot of good brands out there with a lot of great stories. So instead of confusing yourself with all of the masses of information, decide what it is you are looking for in your sleep set. When’s the last time you had a good night’s sleep, and what is preventing you from doing so now? Is your current mattress comfortable, but it’s just getting old and needs replaced? Do you feel your partner every time they turn over, and it causes you to wake up? Do you feel as if your mattress doesn’t have enough support, or do you feel pressure points being triggered? How long do you want your new mattress to last? These are just a few questions to ask yourself and your partner to find out what it is that you want/need in a new mattress. That way, when you walk into a store, you can provide the information that is needed to help you select the “right” mattress for you.
Choosing the right mattress for yourself is all about trusting your body’s comfort zones and preferences. Remember there is no one mattress for everyone. Nobody knows your comfort level better than you. Buying a mattress can be done very easily and quickly when you allow yourself to choose based upon your preference. Some mattresses have thicker price tags on them, typically because there is a longer warranty, more coils, higher quality foams, etc. So if you find two mattresses in similar feels but different price ranges, a good step to take is to weigh out the features and benefits of each one and see which one fits your wants/needs. Remember buying a mattress is about your body, your comfort, your needs, your wants. It’s about you.

- Back sleepers typically need a firmer mattress to give them better support in their lower back and shoulders. Buying too plush of a mattress will typically cause pain in the lower region of your lumbar, restricting you from getting a good night’s sleep.
Recommended comfort range: Plush Firm to Extra Firm
- Side sleepers typically need a softer mattress, as there hips and shoulders are the main points of friction on the mattress. It is essential to allow pressure relief on those areas of the body, as too firm of a mattress will not allow the correct spinal alignment, and the risk of pressure points is increased. Side sleepers with hip or shoulder issues typically have too firm of a mattress and/or a mattress with lack of proper support.

- Stomach sleepers are a little bit different. Most stomach sleepers prefer a soft mattress. However, buying a mattress that is too soft and/or not supportive enough will cause the stomach to sink too far into the mattress putting excessive strain on the lower back. It’s ok to get a plush mattress, but the support factor is essential when making this selection. We recommend a thicker gauge innerspring or denser foam mattress.

- These rules hold true for the majority of consumers. However, there are always exceptions, as not all bodies are built the same. When purchasing a memory foam or latex mattress, these rules are not as strict, as memory foam and latex have the most advanced pressure relief and support in the industry. Because of the conforming characteristics of these mattresses, most of them can be slept on in any position without compromise.
- Guest room mattresses should typically be a good medium feel. Just as when we go to hotels, the mattresses are typically not too firm and not too soft, maintaining a sustainable compromise for those of us who make like a mattress on the softer or firmer side. If a guest room mattress is too soft, then someone with a firm preference will be uncomfortable. If a guest room mattress is too firm, then someone with a soft preference will be uncomfortable. Therefore, by purchasing more of a plush firm mattress, your guest will have a much more comfortable stay.
- Children’s mattresses are something to not take lightly. Many people try to get by as cheap as they can on a child’s mattress. However, a good supportive mattress is essential for children as their bodies are in the developing stage. Proper support aids in spinal alignment, and an unsupportive mattress can cause growth defects, muscle stress, and sleep disorders which lead to health risks. Buying a good mattress now can save you money in the long run as the child will have a good, supportive, and proper sleep surface in their developing years.
